about

The first seconds is an artistic representation of changing radio stations. The dark, smirking laughter of Mr. Jason P. Berry is the transition into the realm of Vacuum Tree Head. The laughter, in this context, has come to seem both amused by the work I did, as well as knowing, as it introduces the compositional mastery of Vacuum Tree Head. My contribution to this introduction is the “wind-up” (Stereolab, Kronos Quartet) and release of a succinct sprinkling of guitar notes (King Crimson, Discipline.) Other than the first minute, which is largely an old portfolio project, this piece is essentially a mix of various segments of existing VTH sound collage. A kind of rearranging of reality, which itself was a rearrangement of reality. And so, the work is not really mine. And yet it is mine in the sense of history, as these sounds are so dear and familiar. As a member of the band, playing flute and guitar, the work of Jason Berry is engrained in me. The “VTH radio station” here plays a simultaneous layering of multiple sound collage pieces created by Jason Berry, as well as sound work created by VTH clarinetist Richard E. Barber. These fragments represent the “tape cut-up” period, and an earlier sound profile of the band. Layering many sound collages together, within the framework of 4:33, creates a harmonic resonance with the Cagean philosophical consideration of the current moments total history, all experiences from earth to the universe beyond, happening along this forward momentum of time and cycles. Is there a score? An akashic record
