Jorge Antunes was born in 1942, in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied Violin, Composition and Conducting. He also majored in Physics at the National Faculty of Philosophy. In 1961, after constructing himself several generators, filters, modulators and other electronic equipment, Antunes founded the Chromo-Music Research Studio, and has since been recognized as the originator of electronic music in Brazil.
In 1965 he began to research the correspondences between sound and color, and wrote works that he called Cromoplastofonias, for orchestras, magnetic tapes, lights, using also the senses of smell, taste and touch.
From 1969 until 1973 he won scholarships to study in Buenos Aires, Utrecht and Paris under Alberto Ginastera, Gerardo Gandini, Francisco Kroepfl, Umberto Eco, Luis De Pablo, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Pierre Schaeffer and François Bayle.
Jorge Antunes is professor of composition at the University of Brasilia and is president of the Brazilian Society for Electroacoustic Music.
In 2002 the Ministry of Culture of the French Government gave him the title of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Antunes received also homages of the Brazilian Government and the distinction of Honorable Citizen of Brasilia. In 2011 he received the title of Commander of the Freedom and Citizenship. In 2012 he got the Ibermusicas Prize, to be resident-composer at the CMMAS in Mexico.
In 2014 was premiered his new opera “A Cartomante" in Brasilia, and he got a commission of Funarte to write a new symphonic poem (“Apoteose de Rousseau"). In 2015 he received a new commission, from Theatro São Pedro, in São Paulo, to compose a new opera (“O Espelho”), that was staged in 2016.
In 2020 he was winner of the Prize Icatu de Artes to compose a new opera: “Leopoldina”. For this, he is residente-composer at the Cité Internationale des Arts à Paris.
Antunes is member of the Brazilian Academy of Music and was a winner of the most important composition competitions in the world: Premio Angelicum, Premio Città di Trieste, Gaudeamus Week, ISCM Festival etc. His scores are published by Suvini Zerboni, Salabert, Breitkopf Hartell, Zimmermann, Ricordi, Sistrum, Universal Edition and Billaudot.
